Ten K-12 and Higher Education Institutions Recognized by Hobsons for their Impact in Student Success

ARLINGTON, Va. – May 9, 2019 - Hobsons, the leader in delivering student success outcomes, today announced the ten finalists of the 2019 Education Advances Awards. Four K-12 schools and districts and six higher education institutions were selected for their impressive work in the field of student success.

Finalists were recognized for their achievements in three categories: College, Career, and Life Readiness, Match and Fit Admission, and Student Success and Advising. The three winners will be announced on July 30 at the Hobsons Summer Institute 2019 in Marco Island, Florida.

“Hobsons is proud to honor the tremendous outcomes and achievements in student success that our clients across the country are delivering every day,” said Kate Cassino, CEO of Hobsons. “The finalists for the Education Advances awards have demonstrated how much is possible when institutions combine people, process, and technology to make a difference in the lives of students.”

The finalists were selected by an independent panel of judges and represent leaders in the education space. The winners in each category will receive a donation of $2,500 to use in continuing their efforts in helping students succeed. Runners-up will receive a donation of $1,000 each.

College, Career, and Life Readiness:

  • Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, Baltimore MD: This private, co-educational, college preparatory school serves 350 students from the city of Baltimore, 100% of whom qualify as low-income. The school uses Naviance to support its goal to prepare students for success in college, work, and life. Since opening in 2007, 100% of their graduates have been admitted to a two- or four-year university. 91% of graduates enroll in higher education within one year, and on average, alumni are graduating at nearly three times the rate of students from similar economic backgrounds.
  • Everett Public Schools, Everett, WA: Everett Public Schools is located just north of Seattle and serves over 20,000 students. Approximately 37% of students in the district qualify for free or reduced lunch, and 13% are English language learners. In 2003-2004, the district found themselves facing a graduation crisis where only 58% of students were graduating from high school on time. As part of a holistic approach to college, career, and life readiness, the district implemented Naviance in the 2014-15 school year and established a deliberate focus on social emotional learning. These initiatives have proven successful, as the class of 2018 had a 95.7% on-time graduation rate.
  • Indianapolis Public Schools, Indianapolis, IN: Indianapolis Public Schools is the largest public school district in Indiana and serves over 30,000 students. In support of their district goal to ensure that students graduate on time and are prepared to become either enrolled in college, enlisted in the military, or employed at a livable wage, IPS implemented Naviance in the 2015-16 school year. As part of this goal, IPS transformed their high school experience in 2017-18 to one that is built around college and career themed pathways.
  • Naaman Forest High School, Dallas, TX: Naaman Forest High School is a diverse public high school in suburban Texas with 64.7% of the student population qualifying for free or reduced lunch. To support underserved students, the school’s counseling department has implemented programs to support their two main goals: increasing postsecondary college and career awareness, exploration, planning and decision making, and using data-driven school counseling practices to close the achievement and opportunity gap. Since implementing Naviance in 2016, the percentage of FAFSA completions at Naaman Forest has increased by 18%. Additionally, senior participation in field trips to local colleges has increased by 55%, and the number of students enrolled in Dual Credit courses has increased by 49%.

Match & Fit Admission:

  • Caldwell University, Caldwell, NJ: Caldwell University is a small, private liberal arts institution in northern New Jersey. Using Intersect solutions, the university has increased growth and awareness. Over the last six years, Caldwell has enrolled their six largest freshman classes, including their all-time high of nearly 500 freshmen in the fall of 2018 (exceeding the previous high by 23.5%). At the same time, Caldwell has increased retention, graduation rates, applications received, acceptances given and FAFSA filers.
  • Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY: Stony Brook is a large, public university located on Long Island. In Fall of 2018, the university utilized multiple Intersect solutions to reach record enrollment levels, with more than 26,000 students from all fifty states and more than one hundred countries. As a result of enrolling best-fit students, Stony Brook has raised the four-year graduation rate of entering freshmen by 15% in the last five years.
  • Wilmington College, Wilmington, OH: Wilmington College is located in southwestern Ohio in a highly competitive region for enrollment of college-going students. The college increases its reach to students who might be previously unaware of Wilmington via multiple Intersect solutions. Using RepVisits, counselors at Wilmington have progressively increased their travel to local schools. Through these solutions, Wilmington has achieved campus enrollment over 1,100 for the first time since 2007.

Student Success and Advising:

  • Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL: Florida Atlantic University implemented Starfish in Fall 2014 to engage students in their student success solution. When they launched, FAU had around 25,000 student records in Starfish. Today, they have increased that number to over 50,000. Prior to implementing Starfish, FAU had a 65.9% retention rate for first-time college students through to their second year. After implementing Starfish as their primary student success tool, they have seen a 14.3% increase, with a retention rate today of 80.2%.
  • Santa Barbara City College, Santa Barbara, CA: SBCC is a comprehensive two-year community college serving the south coast of Santa Barbara County. SBCC implemented Starfish to create an effective and engaging environment for faculty to identify students in need of support. Today, more than 78% of faculty use Starfish to report on student progress (up from 17% on their previous solution). SBCC Counselors report they have better communication with their students, make extensive use of the Starfish early alert flag and kudos functionalities, and now have a comprehensive record of each student.
  • SUNY Broome, Binghamton, NY: SUNY Broome is a two-year college within the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Since implementing Starfish in 2014, the university has seen significant improvements in student success. In Fall 2015, 24% of students who received a flag or early alert earned a grade of “C” or better in that course. By Fall 2017, the number earning a passing grade had increased to 44% through the use of interventions. Over the same time period, course failures for alerted students dropped from 28% to 19%. Overall, the university has found that alerted students were retained at higher rates than students who did not receive alerts.
